Lacey wins Big in the Banner as local riders scoop the other Categories
July 29th
1745 hrs
Sean Lacey
(Dan Morrissey Speedy Spokes) made it to the top of the podium for the second
week in a row as he led home Michael Hennessy (Fermoy) and Paidi O’Brien (DMSS)
after 155 kilometres at Rás Clár today.
These three
had escaped along with Joe Fenlon, Stephen Clancy (both DMSS), Jonathan Gibbs,
(unatt), and Eddie Barry (Blarney) on the lower slopes of the day’s second
climb.
On windy,
hilly circuit that proved punishing for all riders, Dan Morrissey Speedy Spokes
controlled the race with all five riders getting into the first break of the
day. When this was pulled back, they surged again before seeing off the entire
field bar Hennessy.
Great
credit also goes to Jonathan Gibson, returning unattached Vet from Cork, who
rode at the front all day before succumbing on the final climb and coming home
6th.
The sprint was fourth was won by Stephen Clancy (DMSS) whilst
Eddie Barry (Blarney).
Mike Storan was active all say for West Clare CC but had to
settle for 9th in front of clubmate Jarlath Hassett. Matt Slattery
(Killarney) took the first KOH prime whilst Stephen Clancy (DMSS) and Lacey
took the others.
The A3 race was won by Ennis rider Barry Sutton, riding for
DID Dunboyne, whilst there was also local success in the A4 where Mark Shannon,
Burren CC, led home from Cathal Russell for the hosts, Dolmen CC.
134 riders went to post in each of the three races in Dolmen
CC’s first competitive promotion.

Hassett
Claims Clare County Championships
Jarlath Hassett, West Clare CC, emerged
victorious in Clare Cycling Championships last Wed night
after a hard fought sprint with clubmate
Mike Storan.
Storan had gone clear on the Category 4
climb of Knockjames before Hassett bridged across from the chasing bunch with
8k to go. The pair worked to keep the gap over 20 seconds and then jostled for
sprinting position. It was no surprise that Storan paid for his earlier efforts
on the line as Hassett jumped for victory.
DID Dunboyne’s Barry Sutton grabbed third,
followed by West Clare’s Daithi Queally. Dolmen’s Aidan Considine and Philip
Colleran rounded out the top six.
The Championships were revived this year
after a break of two decades by Dolmen Cycling Club supported by Cahill
Taxation Services. Over 35 riders took the flag from clubs across the county on
a dry but windy 60k circuit.
Dolmen CC secretary, Martin McDonnell, was
delighted with the turnout but lamented that the trophy went out of Dolmen
hands,
“We’ll be fighting hard to gain it next
year but would like to thank Cahill Taxation Services for enabling the event to
get off the ground again. We saw a great battle on the course and it augurs
well for the future, especially by giving local racers an opportunity to
prepare for Rás Clár in two weeks.”
Event sponsor Fergal Cahill, whose family
are synonymous with Banteer CC, presented prizes to the first six riders over
the line and expressed his thanks for all the support shown for the event,
“It‘s been a great evening of racing and
I’d like to commend all the riders and clubs on their participation. Thanks are due to all the marshals and
volunteers who made sure the event ran smoothly and safely.”
The next competitive fixture in the Banner
County is Rás Clár which takes place over the same course on July 29th.
There will be three laps for the A1s/A2s, two laps for the A3s and one lap for
the A4s.
Local riders are expected to be competitive
in all categories, especially the A3s after Barry Sutton and Aidan Considine
both made the podium in last week’s Midleton GP.

Competitive
cycle racing is making a comeback to the Banner County on July 29th
next with the reintroduction of Rás Clár after a long absence.
Promoted by the Dolmen Cycling Club, the race will feature a
tough course of 155 kms for A1s and A2s, 108 kms for the A3s and 60Kms for A4s.
With a prize fund of €2000 plus bonuses, the host club are
hoping for a big attendance, attacking racing and a great spectacle throughout
the circuit. Dolmen CC chairman, Philip Colleran, said
“We have been planning to reintroduce Rás Clár for some time
now and are delighted with the support we have got from many quarters. We
expect the top stars on the circuit to come to Clare to make a great
spectacle.”
Coordinator of Clare Sports Partnership, John Sweeney, sees
the event as a hugely valuable addition to the cycling calendar in the county,
“The event reflects the huge upsurge in cycling here. The An
Post Tour of the Burren is showcasing the county’s fantastic amenities for
leisure cycling and now Rás Clár will show what we have to offer the leading
lights of the racing community.”
The event
is being made possible with the support of many local businesses that have
supported the prize fund and general organisation.
